And the nominees are:

What are your predictions for my ranking? How would you personally rank the nominees?

  1. This seems like an interesting bunch. Have not seen any of these, either. I need to do some serious catch up work.

  2. Very tough.

    1. Nyong'o
    2. Squibb
    3. Lawrence
    4. Roberts
    5. Hawkins

    My own personal ranking:

    1. Nyong'o (3.5): Strong emotionally powerful work, the only issue I have with it is the same one I have with Fassbender, it's far too simple a character for her to properly thrive with.

    2. Hawkins (3.5): strong supporting work, rarely in focus but I thought she did well in basically a watered down version of Kim Hunter in Streetcar Named Desire.

    3. Squibb (3.5): Had a few overacting moments but I mostly found her funny and worked well as a contrast to Dern's understated performance.

    4. Lawrence (3): Very over-the-top and I'd say not entirely successful in doing so. She does have some entertaining moments though and I actually quite like how her 'serious' scenes are done.

    5. Roberts (3): Not bad at all but as usual for her thought there was something missing from her portrayal, she's pretty much overshadowed by Streep, and especially Nicholson in the final scene (who should definitely have been the one nominated as firstly Roberts was co-lead not supporting, and secondly Nicholson was just the best of the cast period.)

    1. Wow you really are not enthusiastic about this year. I can't say anything yet but I agree with you that Julianne Nicholson is the MVP of August: Osage County. She's heartbreaking.

On a side note, I don't think Edwin Epps is a limited character. I don't know if it's the writing or Fassbender's portrayal but in my opinion it's a very complex and layered character.

  3. 1. Nyong'o
    2. Squibb
    3. Lawrence
    4. Hawkins
    5. Roberts

    My ranking:

1.Squibb (4) She's so funny and I loved her character in contrast with Dern's

2.Lawrence (4) I liked her even if she overacted in some scenes

3.Hawkins (3,5) fine performance, had her moments too dispite the strong and overshadowing performance of Blanchett

4.Nyong'o (3) I didn't like her so much, she gave a very emotional work, but her character wasn't as complex as Fassbender's and Ejiofor's

5.Roberts (3) even if she is co-lead with Streep, she was overshadowed in every scene by her co-stars

    1. It's funny how most people don't seem to think much of Nyong'o's performance nowadays. During that award seasons, people were raving about her.

    1. I probably like this year a bit more than most people. It's not great but it's quite alright in my opinion.

  5. This was a complicated year for me - I think I preferred Hawkins to the rest of the ladies, though at first I was heavily team Squibb. Roberts is great, but the fact that he role is so large compared to everyone else's confuses me on how to rank her. JLaw and Lupita are easily my least favorites.

A pretty lackluster year for this category, in my opinion.

    1. It's not an amazing year but I don't hate it. It's not one of the worst ever.
