My ranking:
1. Blanchett - 5 (absolutely brilliant at making the whole cross-gender casting not feel gimmicky, and turns in a fascinating performance as a truly washed up artist)
2. Swinton - 5 (I'm so glad she's an Oscar-winner for this. Swinton is just so incredibly compelling in showing the downfall of a devious but ultimately just a professional woman, her final scene is arguably the best acting of 2007 which is saying something.)
3. Ronan - 4.5 (excellent performance at showing the complexities of a young child's reactions to things she simply cannot understand, bravely depicting a very silly stupid girl in quite harsh tones.)
4. Ryan - 4.5 (one-note for sure but I thought she added to the complexities of the film by bravely making her character so crass and almost unsympathetic but not without love for her daughter)
5. Dee - 4 (I really like the film and though Dee has very little screentime I thought she did a great job of making a rather visceral impact as a source of humanity in the film)

EliminaAs for my thoughts:
Blanchett and Ronan are both excellent, and I'd put them at a strong 5 and an extremely strong 4.5, respectively. When I originally watched Michael Clayton, I quite disliked it; I found it a complete bore. I quite like Tom Wilkinson, though. Since then, however, I've learned a lot more about both other people's (extremely high) opinions of her performance and about how to better evaluate a performance, so I feel like I need to watch it again. I assume I didn't find Swinton particularly special simply because she wasn't boisterous and I was so bored by the movie.
Ok, I'll go for 1983.
RispondiEliminaEesh, been a long time since I've seen some of these contenders. Loved Ryan, haven't actually seen Blanchett (shocker). Tilda was swell too. I'll say Blanchett wins this. Then Swinton, Ryan, Ronan, Dee?
