  1. Olivia De Havilland and Hattie McDaniel are among my favorite supporting actress nominees. While I have a tough time choosing between those two, I'd predict:
    1) De Havilland
    2) McDaniel
    3) Fitzgerald
    4) Outspenkaya
    5) Oliver

  2. 1. De Havilland
    2. McDaniel
    3. Outspenkaya
    4. Fitzgerald
    5. Oliver

Love De Havilland and McDaniel, not a fan of Fitzgerald or the film which is in my opinion a terrible adaptation of one of my favourite novels.

    1. What did you think of Olivier and Oberon though? I'm quite interested in seeing it, as it was the film Olivier got his first nomination for.

    2. I haven't seen Wuthering Heights in quite a long time but I remember liking it a bit. Definitely did not think it was terrible the first time I saw it, we'll see if it holds up well on a rewatch.

    3. Tahmeed: Hated Olivier and found him generally lacklustre in all his 1930s parts I've seen (in 1939 as well he also found himself thoroughly overshadowed by Ralph Richardson in Q Planes). His Heathcliff is all kinds of wrong, and it's remarkable how a year later merely he gave one of the greatest lead performances of all-time as a similarly Gothic 'hero' and never looked back in becoming one of the greatest actors of all-time.

Oberon is bland but not overly terrible. Really Fitzgerald is okay compared to those two, and David Niven is actually perfectly okay though Linton has a lot more potential in the role the film does not explore.

Pretty good line up besides Oliver, who was much better elsewhere.

    1. Oliver is the only one I haven't seen yet and I think that the movie doesn't really seem to be very good.

    2. I'd go higher for Schnapp and lower for Keery (I liked his 'badass' moment but felt he didn't build up to it terribly well), agree with the rest though.

Your thoughts on Brown, Harbour, the three main boys, Heaton and Ryder? And Dyer too if that is not too much.

    3. Brown (Might even me by favorite child performance ever. I absolutely loved her performance from start to finish as she makes Eleven such a compelling character. In the first few episodes Brown is terrific at portraying El's unease and distress while being an incredibly mysterious presence. As the season progresses, Brown is heartbreaking as she shows the loneliness of Eleven as well as her pain due to her past and she also shares a terrific chemistry with the other child actors, particularly Wolfhard: she is touching and heartwarming as she slowly begins to open up and find some friends for the first time. Then of course there are the few moments in which Eleven unleashes her powers and in those moments Brown is downright chilling. Ultimately, this is a truly magnificent work: she brings this beautiful and complex character to life without missing any single nuance, from her very first moment to her last, devastating one)

Harbour (Fantastic work from him as well. I thought his badass moments were excellent and there are many moments throughout the season that he makes extremely funny in a rather dark way. Past that, I thought that his performance was truly heartbreaking as he showed perfectly Hopper's bitterness due to the tragedy that affected his life while being such a compelling hero to root for)

Ryder (I honestly thought the was perfect in the role. She does a fantastic job at portraying her character's vulnerable emotional state and in her moments of hysteria I thought she never went too far. I love that she always keeps a certain hopefulness even in the series' darkest moments, and I thought that she was downright amazing in the scene in which Joyce tries to communicate with Will through the Christmas lights. I particularly admire her performance for the fact that within her many scenes in which her emotions are running high she manages to suggest Joyce's life outside of Will's disappearence, perfectly showing her exhaustion to to being a hard-working, single mother as well as conveying her history with her ex-husband)

Wolfhard, Matarazzo, McLaughlin (I liked Matarazzo the most as I thought he was so entertaining in each of his scenes and was a wonderfully comic relief while still grounding his character, nailing each of his poignant scenes. Wolfhard is excellent as he makes for a truly endearing lead and his chemistry with Brown couldn't be more perfect. McLaughlin I felt was the weakest out of the boys but only because his role is technically a bit more one-note than the others, but he still is very effective and believable every step of the way. The chemistry between the three is what makes their work stand out so much and they bring such a wonderful amount of energy whenever they are on screen)

    4. Heaton (I loved his performance. His role could have easily been a cliché but Heaton makes him completely realistic and three-dimensional. He believably portrays his character's off-putting behavior, showing why the other guys would not want to talk to him, but he is also very moving as he shows both the loneliness of his character and his determination to find his brother. He makes Jonathan a truly endearing character and I thought that his chemistry with Dyer was absolutely fantastic)

Dyer (I thought she was great at portraying both her character's maturity and immaturity. She is very realistic as she shows Nancy trying to fit in with the cool guys while suggesting that she does not truly feel at ease when she's with them. Then she is very moving as she shows her guilt for Barb's disappearence and as she herself starts to investigate she delivers a very engaging turn while sharing an excellent chemistry with Heaton)

As for Schnapp, I thought he was completely fine but I don't think he was all that impressive - the other actors made me care about Will more than he did. As for Keery, I thought he was really good. His role started out as the "popular, shallow guy" cliché but as the season progressed I thought he was quite effective at bringing to him some unexpectedly noble qualities.

  10. Never saw Drums (not sure I want to either, that genre of film is not my cup of tea) but Hattie, Olivia, and Geraldine are fantastic. Had I any say, I'd have nominated Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell for The Women hands down. A really great year for supporting actresses!

    1. Absolutely loved Rosalind Russell in The Women, she was hilarious. I also really liked Joan Crawford's turn although I preferred Paulette Goddard, who was terrific in my opinion.
