    1. I already had in mind to see all three of them. I'm particularly interested in Watson's performance.

    1. Magnolia:

Hoffman - 4.5 (It's a quiet, reactionary performance that could have easily gotten lost among the flashier roles in the movie. Hoffman instead delivers a wonderful, sweet performance that supports beautifully the showier performances by Cruise and Moore while leaving a very strong impression himself at the same time. His role may be rather simple but in a way his tender and spontaneous work anchors the movie and serves as its emotional crux)

Macy - 4 (I think Donnie's storyline is not quite among Magnolia's best storylines: it works very well in the context of the movie but at the same time it's not particularly amazing itself. I feel the same about Macy's performance: he doesn't give one of the best performances in the movie but at the same time it's a very strong one that works perfectly within it. Macy is quite moving in his portrayal of his character's desperation with his outburst at the bar being particularly memorable. His final scenes are also good as he nicely brings closure to Donnie's arc suggesting that he might get better in the future. It's a very good performance that certainly adds something to this perfect movie)

Reilly - 5 (Loved him. Reilly delivers a fantastic performance as he brings the right amount of awkwardness to the role making Jim a very endearing and easily likeable character. He is quite entertaining in portraying his character's ineptitude at his job and social interactions but he is also extremely moving as he reveals his loneliness and sadness. His chemistry with Walters is something truly special as they make Jim and Claudia an odd yet beautiful couple to root for. It's a wonderful performance and his monologue in the final scene is a perfect ending for both the movie and his performance)

Hall - 5 (I really loved him as well. Hall does a fantastic job at portraying Jimmy's charismatic personality when he's on TV and his pathetic, vulnerable emotional state when he's not. Hall is extremely good as he never seeks any sympathy for his character as he never glosses over his mistakes, but at the same time he realistically and poignantly portrays his regrets over them and his fear of his imminent death. He also realizes impeccably Jimmy's relationships with his wife and daughter and his scenes with both Dillon and Walters are great. His breakdown on air is a terrific moment and one of the highlight of the whole movie)

    2. Boogie Nights:

Cheadle - 4.5 (I haven't seen the movie in quite a long time but I recall being very impressed by Cheadle's performance. Cheadle is actually very moving as he portrays his character's attempts to lead a decent life and leaves his past behind. He manages to make his subplot compelling and memorable as Buck tries to accomplish his goal and the ending of his storyline is particularly bittersweet as Cheadle shows both his character's happiness for having achieved what he wanted but also a certain bitterness over the fact that he wasn't able to do it in a truly clean and respectable way)

Wahlberg - 4.5 (I don't care for Wahlberg in general but he's excellent in this. Wahlberg does a fantastic job in the scenes Eddie "acts" as Dirk as he is properly over-the-top in a very entertaining fashion. Past that, he is terrific in portraying Eddie's decay and he realistically shows how Eddie gradually becomes more desperate and addicted. He does a very good job at portraying Eddie's volatile, unpredictable and explosive behavior making him both captivating and repulsive to watch. He is a compelling lead and he manages to make us want to follow his story and realizes very well his complex character's arc)

I can't give you my thoughts on Reynolds as he was nominated.

      Inherent Vice:

Phoenix - 5 (An excellent performance from Phoenix. His role is technically one-note as Doc is consistently stoned but within that state Phoenix manages to find some interesting variations. It's a hilarious and entertaining performance and he makes for a wonderful lead to follow around and I love how he manages to make his performance properly humorous and light-hearted without ever making it shallow. He shares some genuinely poignant moments with Waterston and he does an excellent job at portraying Doc's conflicted feelings towards Shasta)

Brolin - 5 (He gave a hilarious deadpan performance and I always think he has more screen-time than he actually has in this movie, which is a true testament to how memorable his performance is. Brolin makes the most out of every moment in his performance as every single line and reaction is simply pitch-perfect and his timing couldn't be better. He never is one-note though and adds a lot of emotional weight to his performance while sharing a truly fantastic chemistry with Phoenix, with their final scene together being the standout of Brolin's performance as it is both funny yet surprisingly moving)

Del Toro - 3 (He was completely fine in the role as I thought he fit well the movie's tone and his few scenes were entertaining enough. I didn't find him all that memorable though and while he is a nice addition to the movie I probably wouldn't have cared if he wasn't in it)

Short - 3.5 (Out of the small supporting characters he probably was my favorite along with Jena Malone's. Short is extremely funny in his brief performance as he shifts so wonderfully from the apparently decent dentist to the completely deranged drug addict. It's a hilarious bit of work and he made the most out of his limited time on-screen)

Waterston - 4.5 (I personally loved her performance and I thought that she was extremely effective despite not having that much screen-time. In her first scene, Waterston is very alluring and mysterious, therefore making us care enough about her character's eventual disappearence. Each of her later scenes are some of the highlight of the movie, with her encounter with Phoenix midway through the movie being probably my favorite scene of it; Waterston is particularly excellent in it as she brings such a great amount of emotional volatility to her character. I love the chemistry she shares with Phoenix as they bring a genuine tenderness to the glimpses of their past together and they make Shasta's and Doc's relationship a particularly puzzling, intriguing and compelling one)
