And the nominees are:
Toni Collette - The Sixth Sense
Angelina Jolie - Girl, Interrupted
Catherine Keener - Being John Malkovich
Samantha Morton - Sweet and Lowdown
Chloe Sevigny - Boys Don't Cry
What are your predictions for my ranking? How would you personally rank the nominees?
1. Sevigny
RispondiElimina2. Jolie
3. Keener
4. Collette
5. Morton
1. Sevigny
RispondiElimina2. Jolie
3. Collette
4. Keener
5. Morton
Personally I'd rank them:
1. Sevigny: 5 (an extremely strong, emotional performance that works perfectly in tandem with Swank's showier work, and really makes the ending of the film work as well it does)
Collette: 5 (small role, big impact, nails her big emotional scene perfectly and in the rest of the film gives a very effective, realistic reactionary performance, really I keep going between her and Sevigny)
3. Jolie: 4.5 (over-the-top but with cause, my favourite performance of hers aa I feel like she uses her natural allure as an actress to create a character, and makes a very viscreal impact, she could have afforded to tone it down a bit at certain points and there is one section of the film where the show gets stolen away from her, but otherwise she's fantastic)
4. Morton: 3 (honestly nothing special, I suppose she's sweet and endearing enough but she is kind of overshadowed by Penn and I don't love Penn's performance either)
5. Keener: 2.5 (very average performance. If they had to nominate someone from the film Cameron Diaz would've been a FAR worthier choice)
That's very interesting, because I completely agree with you about two of them, mostly agree about another and completely disagree about the remaining two.

A shot in the dark. I wish they had nominated Moore or Walters (Magnolia).
I agree that both Julianne Moore and Melora Walters were great in Magnolia. I think Walters in particular is amazing in portraying her character's volatile, unpredictable behavior and she is heartbreaking as she shows her character's desperation and vulnerability. I think Moore is quite great too, and I think that her wildly over-the-top performance manages to work extremely well within the movie.
EliminaAlejandro: Completely agree about Walters. I like Moore's performance a LOT more than most. April Grace and Melinda Dillon were also great.
RispondiEliminaMy nominees would be:
1. Walters: 5 (my all-time favourite supporting actress performance)
2. Sevigny
3. Collette
4. Grace: 4.5
5. Moore: 4.5
I liked Grace but frankly I find most people's love towards her performance quite baffling. I think she's very good but the role itself isn't very challenging.
EliminaWow, all time favourite! Well, she's great. Glad to see some love for Moore's performance, I think her approach worked really well in the movie. I wouldn't put Grace above the other two but I think she did a lot with her very limited work.
EliminaBy the way I'm Alex in Louis' blog in case you don't know :D

A lot of the performances of 1999 have me curious, but I have only seen 2 of the nominated performances (Collette and Osment). I really hope to see more of them soon!
RispondiEliminaGet on The Insider, Magnolia, The Straight Story and The Green Mile as soon as you can. I also like American Beauty but I think it's a bit overpraised (still love Spacey in that movie).
EliminaI think 1999 is an amazing year for movies. Other than the movies suggested by Alex I strongly recommend Eyes Wide Shut (a terrific, haunting movie with a great turn by Cruise and an excellent one by Kidman) and Boys Don't Cry (a harrowing, devastating experience).
EliminaYeah I was talking about the ones that were nominated for acting that year. A personal favourite of mine from that year is Galaxy Quest too.
Elimina@Alex: I've yet to see Galaxy Quest but I probably will very soon.
EliminaOnly one I've seen (recently) is Keener, that's a nomination that's a little confusing to me. Saw Collette so long ago, can't remember all of her performance!
RispondiEliminaSeems like most people don't really care for Keener. I've seen her long ago so I'll rewatch the movie before the review.
